Assaults are usually prosecuted in state courts. Minnesota has five degrees of assault with first degree being the most serious (causing great bodily harm) and fifth degree assault being a misdemeanor and the least serious.

Wisconsin has various levels of battery – which like assault – is defined as
causing bodily harm to another person. In Wisconsin batteries range from a
Class E* felony (most serious) to Class A misdemeanor. (Wisc. Stat. § 940.19.1)
